I was googling around new movies to watch on christmas holiday when i found about Invictus.  Directed by Clint Eastwood (yes, the man behind success of Mystic River, Million dollar baby, and Gran Torino), this film starring Morgan Freeman and Matt Damon tells a story of Mandela life after the fall of apartheid in South Africa.  During his first term as a president, he hosts Rugby world cup and seek this opportunity to unite his countrymen.

invictus (2009)

So, where does the title “invictus” come from? its actually based on fact that Nelson Mandela has the poem “Invictus” written on a scrap of paper at his prison cell, before his presidential election. Invictus is a short poem written by William Ernest Henley, as follow:

OUT of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll
I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul.

The interesting thing is, William Ernest Henley itself a man that never give up despite his disability. He had tubercolusis on 12 years old, and has his foot amputated.. Yet, he still lives with full of spirit. He is still the captain of his soul..   This poem will be one of the thing that reminds me not to give up and live to the fullest.. Be the master of my fate.. be the captain of my soul…
